Macomb Reps Vote To Create Jobs, Repair Local Roads

$635M investment will get residents back to work, fund road improvements

LANSING – Macomb County lawmakers today voted in favor of a plan that will create more than 23,800 jobs for Michigan workers, stimulate our economy and bring much-needed improvement to Michigan's ailing roads and bridges.

"This federal investment will not only impact our state as a whole, but also our local economy," said State Representative Jennifer Haase (D-Richmond). "These projects have the potential to create good-paying jobs for our workers statewide and here at home. It is an important plan that will help get our community and Michigan moving again."

The $635 million federal stimulus plan will fund more than 130 road and bridge improvement projects around the state.

"We all know that our roads and bridges are in need of serious repairs," said State Representative Jon Switalski (D-Warren). "This plan will help ensure that our roadways are properly maintained and help workers get back on the pay-rolls and jump-starting our economic recovery."

Macomb County projects included in the plan are:

  • $475,000 to repair and reconstruct I-94 at the 23 Mile Road exit ramp;
  • $850,000 to resurface I-94 at the 9 and 10 Mile Road exit and entrance ramps;
  • $1.5 million to resurface M-19 between 33 Mile Road and Ashery Creek.

"These projects are really good news for Macomb County," said State Representative Sarah Roberts (D-St. Clair Shores) "When talking to residents, many of the concerns they have are about the poor condition of our roads and the lack of jobs available. This plan will help fix both of those problems."

The stimulus plan passed the House today with a vote of 109-1 and now heads to the Senate.

"These much-needed improvements to our infrastructure will show businesses looking to locate here and other potential investors that Michigan is ready to do business," said State Representative Fred Miller (D-Mount Clemens). "This plan passed the House today with overwhelming bipartisan support and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to do the same."
