LANSING – State Representative Jon Switalski (D-Warren) today reminded residents that Sept. 30 is the deadline to apply for the 2008 Michigan Home Heating Credit, which helps Michigan's seniors and working families pay their winter energy bills.
"In these tough economic times, I want to make sure that our residents know about all the resources that are available to help them," Switalski said. "Families are making tough budget decisions at kitchen tables around the state, and the Home Heating Credit can help ease the burden of paying high winter utility costs. I encourage residents to find out if they are eligible for this helpful program before the deadline passes by for another year."
Residents who did not file for the Home Heating Credit when they filed their income taxes can still do so until Sept. 30. Those who meet the household income limits will receive a voucher to use toward their home heating costs.
To apply for the credit online, obtain an application to mail in or learn about other energy assistance resources, residents can visit the Department of Human Services' (DHS) Web site at www.michigan.gov/heatingassistance. Residents also can call DHS toll-free at (800) 827-4000 to learn more about the program or have a form and instruction booklet mailed to them. Forms and instructions also are available at Treasury offices and at most public libraries, Michigan Secretary of State branch offices and DHS branch offices.
