LANSING – State Representative Jon Switalski (D-Warren) today was sworn in to his first term in the Michigan House of Representatives during a ceremony at the State Capitol marking the beginning of the 95th Legislature.
"I'm humbled that I was chosen to represent the people of Warren and Sterling Heights at our State Capitol," said Switalski who represents the 25th House District. "Today is a turning point for our state and our residents and I'm honored to be a part of it. I'm ready to hit the ground running and make Michigan a better place to live, work and raise a family."
After the ceremony, Switalski and his colleagues went to work immediately by introducing the Hire Michigan First plan, which will ensure that Michigan workers get the first chance at jobs created by companies that benefit from state economic development programs or tax breaks. The plan cracks down on companies that hire illegal workers by canceling their state contracts and tax incentives. It also requires those companies to pay back incentives already received and bars them from obtaining future contracts.
Also on Switalski's agenda is reducing lawmakers' pay, a plan that passed the House last year but was stalled in the Republican-controlled Senate.
"I will fight to ensure that the people of Michigan have a Legislature that works for them, not against them," Switalski said. "I also will fight to create good-paying jobs for Michigan's hard-working residents and ensure that our children have the education necessary to compete for jobs in the 21st century global economy. I am committed to this job and to working hard to move our community and our great state forward."
